Costa de Prata
Costa de Prata (the Silver Coast) has the longest coastline in all of Portugal. It stretches along 200 kilometers from Espinho in the north all the way down to Ericeira. The country's largest motorway (the A1) runs through this coastal region making Costa de Prata highly accessible to tourist.
Costa de Prata is the most economically developed region of the country and has much to offer to its visitors all year round. On the coastline itself, it's beautiful white, sandy beaches offer tourists and residents opportunities to indulge in various water sports and fishing.
Nature lovers will be treated to the pleasures of curative springs, views of lush vegetation of secular forests, and bird sanctuaries.
Gastronomers will be far from disappointed. Local/regional dishes coupled with their tasty Bairrada wine and finished off with mouth-watering sweets makes for a perfect Portuguese meal. (The word "barraida" was derived from the Portuguese word "barros" meaning clay due to the kind of soil they have in their wine region.)
Costa de Prata is home to famous traditional treasures such as its porcelains and crystals. It is also home for many beautiful and historic places such as Anadia (the centre of the Bairrada wine), Aveiro (also known as "The Venice of Portugal" with their colorfully painted swan-necked boats and beautiful lagoons), Jardim do Paço or Bishop´s Palace gardens, created in the 18th century by Bishop João de Mendonça and located at Castelo Blanco), Caramulo ( a former spa town), Obidos (a medieval town that has been completely walled in and preserved to this day) and the most famous place of them all, Fatima (where the Blessed Virgin Mary appeared to three little children in 1917. To this day pilgrimages are made to Fatima to visit the Cova Da Iria (Irene's Cove) where she first appeared to the children.
